Château Canon Montségur Cuvée Oscar

A passion for vineyards and wine

Sébastien Pelard, whose family has been farming since 1640, bought Canon Montségur in February 2019 and transitioned from growing arable crops to wine. “Wine is a story of alchemy between a vineyard site, vines and the creation of wine”, says this agronomist who fell in love with the property and its adjoining vineyard. The site has multiple attributes: it is located on a magnificent clay-limestone hillock with soils that are conducive to producing top wines; it boasts biodiversity with spring water ponds collecting water from the property; and it has an old-world charm epitomised by a superb noble residence and 18th-century buildings that can be used to develop wine tourism.

Located in the village of Salles de Castillon, in the heart of the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, the estate covers 23 hectares of unbroken vineyards. The vines are 40 years old on average and thrive on clayey and clay-limestone soils. The vineyard is planted to 41% Cabernet franc, 12% Cabernet-Sauvignon and 47% Merlot. Single vineyard selections are the norm during the winemaking phase and the wines are now aged in separate batches.

The different vineyard sites produce 3, soon to be 4 wines!
– Château Canon Montségur cuvée Oscar encapsulating the pleasure of authenticity and the hallmark features of the growth.
– Château Canon Montségur Cuvée Lancelot, expressing creativity – vinified and crushed by hand in wooden tanks, this single varietal Cabernet Franc comes from selected vines and is 80% aged in amphoras and 20% in casks.
– La Rose de Maëlys offering the pleasure of a fresh, aromatic and fruity single varietal Cabernet-Sauvignon rosé.

There will be other new releases in the future: 0.7 hectares of Malbec will be planted in spring 2020 and Sébastien is already mulling plans for Sémillon and Sauvignon blanc.

All of these plans have an overriding objective revolving around sustainable farming, namely to “incorporate a farming system into an existing environment and to establish an agronomic vision of the vineyard”. Tillage and soil loosening; use of green fertilisers retaining ground cover and mulch for organic matter to rejuvenate the soil and biodiversity; reversion to simple Guyot pruning to preserve vine vigour; quicklime amendments to rebalance pH levels; hilling in the winter and mechanical weed removal (no chemical weedkillers) are all part of this vision.

Testimonial:

“Just like arable crops, soil life is crucial to the health and balance of vines. Vineyard soils regain their micro fauna and functions using simple farming techniques that rely on agronomic principles, observation and good old-fashioned farming wisdom which my family has plenty of!” Sébastien Pelard.
