Château Jeandeman
Mancèdre’s vineyard was totally destroyed by the severe frost that struck during the harsh winter of 1956 and remained mothballed for forty years. It belonged to the grandparents of current owner, Jean Trocard, who were too old to replant it. In 1994, Jean decided to rise to the challenge of restoring the property. He faced a mammoth task – everything needed rebuilding – but the desire to breathe new life into the land outweighed the challenge.
This boutique vineyard of just 11 hectares is set amidst the classified growths of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Its clearly stated ambition is to rank first amongst the non-classified growths.
A 400-year-old family history of making wine
The history of the Roy-Trocard family dates back to 1628, almost 400 years ago, when the Trocards bought their first vines in the Libourne area. Since then, each of the 15 generations has produced a winegrower, both male and female. Over the years, a family-owned vineyard stretching over a total 68 hectares has emerged, covering 4 Bordeaux appellations: Château Mancèdre, Pessac-Léognan; Château Jeandeman, Fronsac; Château Laborde, Lalande de Pomerol; and La Piecelle, Bordeaux.
Testimonial:
“Over the years, the vines had become overgrown and we had to remove the vegetation, uproot the vines, clear and level the ground, lay out the future rows and drain every square piece of land, foot by foot. The first half-hectare plot of Cabernet-Sauvignon was planted in 1994 on a beautiful gravel-strewn knoll. Since then, every year until 2006, we have painstakingly replanted all the vineyards: 10 hectares of red vine varieties are now on-stream and range from 16 years old for the oldest to 10 for the youngest. This fascinating project continued in 2012 when an additional 3 hectares of white varieties were planted. Integrated pest management has been used in Roy-Trocard vineyards for 20 years because we believe we are only the custodians of the land we farm.” Jean Trocard
Distinguishing features:
Alongside the family’s small former farmhouse, in 2001 Bénédicte and Jean Trocard had a winery built in stone, embellished with small red bricks reminiscent of the winter town houses around Arcachon bay, just a stone’s throw from Pessac-Léognan. Sunlight streams into the winery through large windows on all four sides, revealing the barrel cellar on one side and the tank room on the other.
