Château Croix de Bertinat
Expression

Located 3 km South-West of the village of Saint-Emilion, Château Croix de Bertinat is an historic estate. The Cassini map of 1756 mentions a property by the name of Bertinat in Saint Sulpice de Faleyrens, on the site of the estate’s present-day manor house.

By 1873, the Bertinat growth was listed in the third edition of the Feret ‘Bordeaux and its Wines’ Guide.

At the end of the 19th century, after the property was divided up for inheritance reasons, the manor house became separated from the vineyards, which were subsequently broken up. From 1960 onwards, the vineyards were gradually taken over and restructured by Christian Lafaye who called the estate after the mission cross – known as the Bertinat Cross – erected in front of the property in 1872.

When the new owners bought the vineyards and former manor house in 2012, they restored the property to its original configuration. After a career in industry which took them across all five continents, this globe-trotting couple decided to settle down in the Saint-Emilion wine region to take up a new challenge.
In the vineyards: they have opted for environmentally responsible viticultural techniques.
At harvest time: the grapes are harvested by machine with optical sorting. “The quality of our warm gravel soils allows our Cabernets – especially the Cabernet Francs – to ripen perfectly.”
In the winery: vatting time lasts for several weeks. The wines are subsequently aged in tanks or French oak casks, mainly from Allier oak, which imparts just the right touch of finesse, allowing Château Croix de Bertinat to skilfully combine classicism and modernity. Anne-Marie and Patrick Saunier’s first vintage was the 2012.

Testimonial:

“After an international career in industry spanning thirty years, we decided to take up a new challenge and fully live out our passion for wine by buying a wine estate, albeit at a time in life when other people are considering retirement. We had been very fond of wines from the Saint-Emilion area for a long time and were therefore naturally drawn to the appellation to realise our dream.

We chose Château Croix de Bertinat for a number of reasons: its prime location for growing vines; its manageable size; vineyards and a winery that had been well looked after; and the estate’s key figures, with whom we felt a resonance: Alain Lafaye, the former owner, Thomas Duclos, the winemaker and vineyard worker Benoît Mathieu, all of whom decided to stay with us on the project.”

Distinguishing features:

A complete restructuring of the cellars including a new winery, a new ageing cellar, a tasting room and an area for vineyard equipment was completed for the harvest in 2014. All of them are housed in an elegant building, mirroring the wines themselves where tradition combines with modern technology.
