Château Malromé
A taste for the finer things
The former residence of Toulouse-Lautrec, Château Malromé is situated in Saint-André-du-Bois, in the Entre-Deux-Mers region. Both an historic site and a museum, with a soul still very much alive, it is also home to an extensive vineyard covering clayey limestone soils, plateaus and hills that has been farmed for 5 centuries. All of this makes it a memorable discovery.
Its owner since 2013, Mr. Huyhn, has constantly strived to restore Malromé to its former glory. The first investments were made in the vineyard, where the 42 redesigned hectares are now divided between 35 hectares of red and 7 of white vines, and the consolidation process is still ongoing. In the winery, temperature control and unloading areas for the crop became the immediate priorities. Lastly, and concurrently with this, the chateau and grounds dating from the 16th century have been restored according to conventions, using materials from the region and the period.
Since 2013, Bruno Lacoste has been charged with making Château Malromé’s wines and alongside Charles Estager, also a winegrower, he has built up a coherent and evolving range with a top wine, Château Malromé, and an Esprit de Malromé label in red, rosé and white.
The packaging of the wines, as well as the aesthetics of the setting, have been redesigned by the women of the family, who have a pronounced taste for the finer things in life.
At Malromé, art is pervasive: the works and life of Toulouse-Lautrec are showcased in the historic wing of the chateau; a temporary exhibition room is the stage for contemporary art; culinary art has been entrusted to Maison Darroze and its Adèle restaurant since 2018; and the art of entertaining and tasting are at the core of a visit and a tasting room which are fully in keeping with the setting and the wines.
Testimonial
« We wanted to join the In a Bottle Club to share the experience of a group of winegrowers who promote the quality image of Bordeaux wines at very reasonable prices. Improving quality has been Malromé’s main challenge since 2013. Measuring ourselves against others from a wine tasting perspective, sharing ideas and meeting our audience, are the driving forces behind our desire to join the Oenoteam winemakers’ club ».
