Château Barrabaque, located in the Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac appellation areas, near Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, produces fine, Merlot-dominant Bordeaux.
Achille Noël, a wine merchant from the Lille region, bought the historic 18th-century property in 1936. Nicole Noël, who headed up the property until 2004, successfully turned it into one of the appellation’s reliable choices. After learning the ropes in Saint-Emilion, Caroline Noël-Barroux took over the torch in 2004. With no fewer than 7 Favourite Picks in the Guide Hachette over the past 10 years, this family property has helped promote the appellation’s reputation.
In the interests of health and showing respect for the environment, vineyard management is sustainable. Growing and winemaking techniques are a combination of traditional and modern, involving tillage, careful sorting of the crop, fermentation in closed temperature-controlled vats, maceration for a minimum of 3 weeks and barrel maturation.
By pruning the vines short, removing buds and using cluster thinning, a tight rein can be kept on yields in order to produce quality wines.
Testimonial:
« We see ourselves as standard bearers for the appellation. Château Barrabaque’s vines are located on a magnificent south-facing hillside, with the Dordogne passing below. The 10 hectares stretch over clay-limestone (90%) and clay-siliceous (lower slopes) soil, and the wines are remarkably powerful and delicate. They are the epitome of Fronsac! ». Caroline NOEL-BARROUX
Le « plus » :
The natural drainage of the soils and the diversity of the micro climates on the hillsides. A generational approach where the wines and the range evolve over time.
