Les petits pieds du Mongeat

Isabelle joined Haut-Mongeat in 1997 and represents the fourth generation to run this family estate that she knows well after growing up here and watching her parents work on the property. Château Haut-Mongeat’s 16-hectare vineyard is located in Genissac, a few kilometres from Libourne, on mostly gravel soils planted primarily to Merlot in the Graves de Vayres area.

Château Haut-Mongeat has been certified organic since 2013 – it is the culmination of a personal project long thought through by Isabelle and in keeping with her values and the persona of her wines. Her sensitivity to biodynamics and biodiversity along with her penchant for agroforestry all factored into the decision to go organic. The adage “we do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors but borrow it from our children” also guides her choices.

“Here, tillage involves every other row of vines so that native plants can thrive. In the row with grass cover, we sow deep-rooted cereal crops like oats or barley to promote natural aeration of the soil. Pruning, de-budding, suckering and leaf removal are all done by hand”.

Testimonial:

“I began working with Thomas Duclos in 2008. I like his 360° vision of the vintage, his sincerity and his knowledge. He understands my intent to show respect for the vineyard sites and values that have been passed on to me. With his help, I can move forward confidently and continue to safeguard my values”.

Distinguishing features:

“I come from a farming family spanning five generations and I would like to put into practice and pass on the techniques that were used by my ancestors. Their culture stemmed from natural and local resources. Modernity must be able to draw on the expertise of the past”.
